Weekend Update
Friday Night Report
Trina Turk had a little shindig at her flagship store here in PS. Special guests included Michelle Phillips and "Your Pal" Hal Lifson. A nice meet and greet mingle while looking at clothes there's no way in hell I could ever wear.
I love Trina, but I hate getting ready for anything hosted by her. She's just so fabulous. All I can to is stare into my closet, a sea of solid blacks and neutrals, poster child for Banana Republic and J Crew that I am, and feel overwhelmed by the sheer lack of any pattern or print. All I have is a hawaiian print shirt and trust me, that would not go over well with this crowd. So I donned my usual uniform: flat front khakis, black linen shirt, black belt and black boots and stood there with my wine in hand and had a great black and khaki time despite the monochromality (hey, I made up a word!) of my being.
Everyone was going out for drinks at Citron a.k.a. The Lemon Bar afterwards. Citron is cool. Hip. Urban even. I love it. I feel like I'm not in Mayberry anymore. Interesting clientele and good mod decor. One problem? The drink prices are outrageous. Maybe I'm a total cheapskate but honestly... $12 for a fucking cocktail? Please. My cousin has thusly dubbed it The Sucker Bar.
So I skipped out, went home and made my own damn Lemon Drop for about 50¢. And it was good.
Saturday Night Report
After another Segway filled day, courtesy of the gentleman on the right (aside: I took that photo while seated on the Tiffany Blue Vespa - with matching helmet), we went over to my aforementioned cousins house for cocktails with the Northenders gang. We all used to get together every weekend (and several times during the week) but lately everyone has been going in 50 different directions and we've not been hanging out like we used to. It was a beautiful warm spring evening and it was great to get together again and share some laughs with good friends.
Dog Island Revisited
Upon further investigation, perhaps Dog Island (that I linked to yesterday) is not such a great idea. I thought it was a rescue facility and I was keen on the concept of letting unadoptable dogs run free as opposed to keeping them in shelters or destroying them. Apparently (thanks to a heads up from Mopsie and the rigorous investigative work of the missus) they actually advocate surrendering your beloved family pet.
Just so we are clear, I do not support that concept!
In Other News:
With a rebuilt the carb, new distributer and fixed brakes (a leak in the vacuum) the convertible is running like a dream. It's time to start working on some of the cosmetic defects on the interior. I need a new dash, some upholstery repair and a friggin radio then she'll be in tip top shape.
The kittens have changed dramatically in the last 3-4 days. They are now 4 1/2 weeks old and off the bottle (unlike me) and eating solid food and drinking water. Praise [insert deity of choice here]. I thought bottle feeding was exhausting but damn... trying to keep track of them (and keep them off the ceiling) is tough! They are jumping, climbing and running all over the place. They're crazy!
Okay off to meet some folks for a late breakfast! Enjoy your Sunday.
Posted by MJ at May 4, 2003 11:12 AMDid you take a look at the Vacation Island thing? It's where you get to take a month-long vacation with your dog on a separate island (or something - weird idea) and on the info page it actually says, "We apologize to not offer this to poor people but it takes an enormous amount of money to afford this type of beauty." What?!? The wording there could have been a bit softer, methinks. And then there's this beauty, "Recent legislation in several towns has taken the costs of Dog Islands out of tax money." Greeaaaat.
You know, it's a nice idea if you have to get rid of your dog anyway for whatever reason, but to be all, "Hey, you selfish bastard, give us your dog" about it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
And here I thought it was a poochie version of "Exit to Eden" or something...
Posted by: Natalie at May 4, 2003 11:34 AMWhen I read the inability to offer the vacation option to poor folks comment I thought perhaps Dog Island was a farce website. Then I began really looking at their site and reading what they were saying about people enslaving their dogs and got a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach -- the kind where you wish you could vomit but instead you just suffer for hours.
Glad to hear you don't support that MJ. And Natalie -- cheers to you as well.
um. Mopsie? What's this business? Mopsie and mopsa and nary the two shall meet?
Posted by: mopsa at May 4, 2003 03:35 PMHmm... don't know.. kindred spirits perhaps? Mine is from Peter Cottontail (a college nickname)... and yours?
MJ hope you don't mind our little tete-a-tete via your comments! I'll buy ya a 50 cent Lemon Drop anytime... hell I'll buy ya the $12 dollar version if I've been drinking!
Posted by: Mopsie at May 4, 2003 03:44 PMIt is a farce website, isn't it? At first, I thought it was real, but looking at it further, it's not. Try to buy something. They happen to be "out of stock." It's always 74 degrees and sunny. Click on the local site links for "Super Fun Day." They all have a message letting us know that they're "working 'round the clock" to get the sites up. The stuff about being rich and the dogs partnering off after being there for a time. It's brilliant and funny!

Posted by: MJ at May 4, 2003 08:17 PMWell now I just feel darn right silly. :^/
Posted by: Mopsie at May 4, 2003 08:23 PMI personally thought this was a great thing in the FAQ part -
Every now and then some dogs gang up and kill and then eat another dog, but this is just natural, and it's okay for it to happen now and then, but normally this is not the case.
Because that makes me want to let my dog be free now! I think these people have forgotten to take their medicine lately...
Posted by: Nicole at May 4, 2003 08:53 PMI read the entire site... What a total crock! The "Soothing Sounds" are just silly. Yeah, I want to be "Jane Godale Dogologist" okay? The wording in many places just smacks of fakery. Plus, I doubt there is a chance in hell any goverment would give up or allow the sale of land, otherwise uninhabitable islands or not, for this purpose.
Oh, and did you check out the site they link to called www.homelessgradcenter.com? Another complete hoax.
