PS Fire Watch 2003
Wind shift brings smoke, evacuees to valley
We had the most brilliant sunset last night as the smoke began to make it's way through the Beaumont Pass. And this morning there is a distinct haze over everything. My eyes burn a bit and my lungs can tell the air quality is rapidly declining.
While I was somewhat relieved to read the above article this morning, I have a problem with one of the quotes:
"Even if the fires came close to Palm Springs, it couldn’t make it over the mountains," he said. "There’s nothing for it to catch on to there."
In a word: Bullshit.
We had a major fire that ripped through the entire canyon about 3 years ago. Oh and let's not forget that there is a FOREST at the top of the mountain. Last time I checked, pine trees were still combustible. But maybe this weatherman knows something I don't. Check out the Tram Cam for a view of our valley obscured by smoke. Notice the trees? There's nothing for it to catch on to there my ass..
update: check out this composite radar image. That's all fire and smoke.
Posted by MJ at October 29, 2003 10:37 AMThere are trees at the top of the mountain?? I was just up there, and I don't remember seeing trees!! Let me see...I remember a bar, a bartender, a vodka bottle..possibly two vodka bottles, a rack of lamb, wine bottles, more wine bottles, then I remember running into a motley drunk group of people on my way down...nope, don't remember any trees.
You Northsiders need to keep look-out for the flames! I've been stocking up on soda water, just in case there is an emergency or fantastic party, which ever comes first.
Would it be wrong to dress up as a stupid-ass hunter who gets lost in the woods so he uses a flipping flare for someone to find him??!! I mean really, who doesn't carry a fucking cell phone with them?? They're giving them away, and this jerk pulls out a flare.
This is when decorating in a minimalist style really pays off!! I can pack all of my belongings into the convertable and still have time to stop off at Toucans for drink on my way out of town.

Posted by: uh-oh, him at October 29, 2003 12:45 PMAs my good buddy Staz said in an email today:
"Yes, trees still burn - that guy is an idiot...but not, of course, as stupid as the hunter...why don't you freakin' hunt for a freakin' CLUE..."
