WooHoo!

I WON! I will soon be the lucky recipient of a scrumptious South African care package. Chock full of chocolate, booze and gooseberries.

I have no clue what a gooseberry is or how one prepares them but I can't wait!

A gooseberry in this case is not the English gooseberry, but the Cape gooseberry which is known in England (and France) as Physalis.

I think fresh-picked they resemble a cherry tomato or a tomatillo (with a husk) in texture and style, but they taste like orange. You could probably use it like any fresh or canned fruit, such as baked in a pie, a topping on ice cream, just slurped with a spoon!

Actually, you can use this one:

Cape Gooseberry Fridge tart

1 packet Tennis biscuits
2 tablespoons custard powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tin chilled evaporated milk
1 tin gooseberries
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon gelatine, soaked in 1/4 cup cold water

Pour syrup off gooseberries and add water to make 2 cups liquid. Boil syrup. Mix custard powder, sugar and salt to a paste and add to syrup. Boil till it thickens. Add soaked gelatine. Allow to cool. Add gooseberries. Beat evaporated milk until it thickens and add to mixture. Pour into dish lined with biscuits and set in refrigerator.

Okay Farrago - A couple of things about that recipe...

First off - What the HELL is a TENNIS BISCUIT?!

Also, custard powder... Not a clue...

Gelatine? Well, I know what it is, but still... I'm getting visions of Gary Turner's legendary trifle gone horribly, horribly wrong...

Can I just put gooseberries on ice cream or something? What do you do with them?!

Heck, no ... I don't think I will post Tennis biscuits and custard powder. That will really add some serious weight to the parcel.

Putting the gooseberries on ice cream will be just fine. In a trifle would work too!

In fact, anything you would do with canned peaches would work with the gooseberries too.
